Best Horror Movies of 2009

2009 wasn’t the best year for horror films but it did give us a successful remake, a new film by a legendary director, a surprise Blair Witch inspired low budget classic, and a film with Nazi zombies—so it wasn’t all bad. Without further ado, the best horror movies of 2009.

My Bloody Valentine 3D

This horror-remake with a 3D twist shocked fans and critics alike by being one of the surprisingly best and most fun horror films of recent memory. The pot is largely the same with a few divergences from the original, but all-in-all the film is faithful to the original and does a great job of using the 3D affects to keep you screaming.

Drag Me to Hell

Director Sam Raimi returned to his horror/comedy roots (see Evil Dead) to direct this fun, horrific romp about a girl who is cursed to Hell. It’s not the scariest horror movie of the year but it was one of the most fun and it was great to see Raimi back to his roots after the Spiderman movies.

Paranormal Activity

The surprise success of the year, this tiny budget film that was released nationwide after a monumental online petition system became one of the most talked about films of the year. Another entry into the shakey-cam horror genre, “Paranormal Activity? did a good job of attempting to show a house haunting as convincingly as possible. It was a truly scary film that made me cuddle up in my bunk bed in fear.

Dead Snow

Dead Snow is about Nazi Zombies in Sweden. That’s right, Nazi Zombies. This film was one of the dark horse candidates for best horror film pretty much the day the plot was revealed. It takes the subject matter more seriously than you’d think and is a great addition to any zombie-lovers’ collection.
