Lhundrup Dhechen (Great Blessing)

Synopsis of the screenplay

Lhundrup Dhechen (Great Blessing) by Elisabetta Errani Emaldi

The experience of three friends exploring Kathmandu and its charming temples In contact with mysterious Tibetan monks and paranormal events, In the monastery of Kopan on the hill of the sun, looking for enlightenment. When Dharma transforms itself into a diamond sword able to open the hearts and transmit light.

The above mentioned title, is the Tibetan surname that I received from Lama Lhundrup Rigsel after my initiation happened in Nepal, in the monastery of Kopan, on November 2001.Where Dhechen means Great Blessing. The story begins when my friends Serena Silvestri (a doctor) and Franco Cascini (a judge retired) ask me to go with them to Nepal, in the above mentioned monastery, in order to meditate. Very interested on that, I decide to leave with them and enrol for the One Month Lama Rim Course November 5 – December 5, 2001.

This story is a real experience in contact with the extraordinary and mysterious world of the paranormal, lived by me, by the famous Lama Yeshe (reincarnation of Lama Tenzin Osel Rimpoche), Lama Zopa Rimpoche, Geshe Lama Konchok, Lama Charo (the monk-child able to remember his previous life: he found his previous family) and by Zina Rachevsky (daughter of the Prince Romanov run away from Russia during the Revolution. Her mother was a rich American heiress and Zina lived in Hollywood; she became a famous actress and when she decided to become Buddhist she gave Lama Yeshe Kopan hill as a present. The place where the monks built the monastery).

After the enrol, I decide to become vegetarian. Some months before I leave, I dream Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and Padre Pio: they send me messages. Remembering other dreams, I perceive that Christ is leading me, through friends who invite me to enrol to Buddhist courses, to strengthen that all religions, when they teach love and brotherhood, lead to the same source. In the first day in the monastery I have a dream, and days later, during a meditation, an extraordinary experience with Jesus Christ. In October, at home, I was half-asleep and I saw some Buddhist monks flying away from me towards the ceiling, and they smiled. That happens many times and each time I feel that they have taught me something. It happens also in Kathmandu in the hotel Manaslu where I stay with my friends before leaving for the monastery.

In Kathmandu Serena and Franco introduce me to Gopal, one friend of them. Gopal is a Nepalese lawyer who fights for the rights of Nepalese people, risking his life. He talks about the Maoist guerrilla warfare and all the problems linked to the King’s uncle, after the Royal Family was killed off. Gopal says that the Nepalese political situation is heavy and he thinks that peace won’t last long. Gopal and Franco talk about their plans about the orphan children that must be approved. Gopal tells us that he also wrote a book about human rights and it will be distributed to people by the end of the month. Nepalese government has forbidden that, but he contacted the most important worldwide humanitarian organizations in order to intervene if he is arrested and beated. My friends and me visit the fantastic Durbar Square and the Kumari Devi Palace, the famous living Goddess, and my friends tell me its story, explaining that Hinduism and Buddhism are an extraordinary example of permeation and tolerance.

Last night in Kathmandu I wake up and I remember an image: a group of people smiling at me, among which I see a Buddhist monk and a young man, tall and with long black hair. On November the 4th, we reach the monastery of Kopan. In the afternoon, we visit a village at the bottom of the hill, where there is the famous Stupa Boudhanath. In the evening, when we come back to the monastery, we meet Jolanda; a Spanish woman who will be our room-mate. When Serena and me enter the bedroom, we realize that Jolanda has just finished to cry. Later, she tells us she lost her 16 years old son in a terrible car accident: in the collision one of his knees has run through his heart, killing him. Jolanda falls depressed many times, but Serena and me will be able to help her and become real friends.

On November the 5th we reach the gompa for our first meeting with the Worshipful Master Neil, and I am struck by a group of French people: six women and five men, among which there is the Buddhist monk Jean François and Willy, with his long hair. I gaze at them, I think I already know them. Unexpectedly, a flash back: I remember my dream, the last day in Manaslu Hotel in Kathmandu. As Serena, Franco and I speak French, in accordance with Karen (the woman monk who will lead meditations), are accepted in the French group in order to talk over the Master’s teachings every day at 2 p.m.. From that time on, there will be a special relationship between the French group and us. In the screenplay I describe teachings about Dharma and the life of Buddha by our Worshipful Master Neil. In the monastery there are 167 guests, coming from all over the world. Karen invites us to “Karma Yoga?: each person should volunteer and work together on common good. Serena volunteers as doctor for the monks and possible patients, and I, with her permission, volunteer as her assistant.

We become part of the monastery life: every day we wake up at 5 a.m., with the sound of cymbals, songs, horns, mantras and prayers. Soon the Lotus position causes problems to our knees and silence and fast make life hard. Many guests fall ill and during our turn in infirmary there is always a queue of patients waiting to be cured. During a meditation I ask to my inner master if I will be able to find a film producer for my screenplays; the answer is a vision of a group of monks with guns who fire against the sky. I understand I have to ask for a prayer. After having seen the charming monks’ ceremony, I go and meditate and pray they can be Buddha quickly, in order to help mankind to leave samsara. Immediately I have another vision of a beautiful shining white Lotus flower, whirling over my heart. Nights later, in my dreams I receive the answer to my question: a group of monks with a sharp log break down a door.

That dream makes me understand that one door will open for me and I find a producer, but it takes time and hard work. During meditations leaded by Karen, I have extraordinary visions: Dalai Lama embracing me, Buddha asking me to work hard to become Buddha myself, and when I tell him that I don’t know if I ever will be able to, I see a tear-drop running down his face. Touched, I promise him to do my best to be like him and help mankind to leave samsara. Many other experiences are described in the screenplay. Franco tells me about his unique experience with Tara (mother of all the Past and Future Buddhas), happened years before in Tibet and also Serena tells me about her unique experience regarding reincarnation happened in this same monastery seven years ago.

Unfortunately, the peace of the monastery is broken by the Maoist war. Maoist guerrilla explodes some buildings even one TV station. Monks worried cancel the following course. Night and day we listen to the sound of machine-guns in the valley. Maoist guerrilla is approaching monastery. Our staying in that place finishes with rituals and initiations made by monks dressed with their Tibetan religious costumes. In Kathmandu we cannot leave the hotel for two days because of strike and brawling. We spend our last days visiting the city. The very last day Gopal leads us to Patan, he has just started to distribute his book (at least, he reaches out without problems with the Nepalese government). While we are leaving, they tell us that there has been fires from an helicopter: 100 people injured and ten people killed. Franco will reach out in one of his plan to help orphan children. Jolanda leaves her job in Spain and moves to India, to the monastery of Dharamsala, to study the Tibetan language in order to act as an interpreter for the Dalai Lama.

Prophetic Dreams

A little while ago, I went to the library to check out some books. I’ve been reading a lot of modern books lately so I decided to change it up and see if there were any older books that I could find. On the fifth floor, in an empty aisle where no one was close by, one book struck out at me. In barely readable, faded golden letters, the book was called The Psychic Side of Dreamsby Hanz Holzer. I pulled the little book out of the shelf and took a look at it. It was just a plain midnight blue cover; the red binding, torn. I opened it up and the first thing I saw was the copyright date – 1976, a decade before I was even born. I decided to check the book out, even though the book was old, I didn’t see why I should disregard it.

Up until now, I have really enjoyed the book. It sort of has a mysterious fashion about it, written in a very old, formal way by an author who had spent 15 years of his life collecting stories of people’s dreams as research. The book so far has inspired me to write the last three introductions about dreams. In the following, I would like to share some true stories from the book that I thought were pretty… “eye-opening? to me. They are stories of people who have had prophetic dreams, in which they would dream about a vision first, then it would unfold in reality later after they woke up. Again, as this book is somewhat old, most of occurrences have happened in the mid-1950’s, but as you read them, you may find some of these dreams quite interesting.

Case Examples of Prophetic Dreams

1. “Mrs. Elaine F. of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, had a dream in 1969, in which she saw a group of people having a party. They seemed like girl scouts to her and she herself was off in the trees looking on, while the group was celebrating. Suddenly some people came out of nowhere and began killing the “girl scouts.? The killers were dressed in black and had bushy hair. In the dream she was particularly frightened by the eyes of the leader, who she saw clearly. When she awoke the following morning, she described the scene and how she had seen blood running from the wounds of the victims. Ten days later the Sharon Tate murders broke into the headlines. As soon as Mrs. F. saw a picture of Charles Manson in the newspaper, she recognized him as the man she had seen in her dreams earlier? (Holzer 42-43).

2. “In the summer of 1958, Mr. Glover dreamt he was sleeping in a tent beside a stream along with several other people in tents, sleeping bags and trailers. Behind the campsite was a tall, rocky cliff towering over the sleeping campers. Suddenly the earth began to shake and with a tremendous roar a great section of the cliff collapsed and came crashing down on them, burying them all in tons of rock and dirt. Mr. Glover related the dream in every detail to a friend also interested in paranormal dreams, Flora G. of San Francisco. Three days later the newspaper were full of an earth upheaval at Yosemite National Park. A campsite was buried by the very landslide he had vividly seen in his dream? (Holzer 45).

3. “Mrs. Susannah D. of New Jersey is a housewife who has had evidential dreams since age twenty. After her marriage she lived for a time at lake Worth, Florida, but three months later the family decided to come back to New Jersey. The night before they were ready to leave, Mrs. D had a dream. She saw a woman dressed all in black standing beside a car turned upside down, dabbing at her eyes with a white handkerchief. In the dream, the woman said to Mrs. D., “Please find my daughter, tell my daughter.? Mrs. D. remembers clearly thinking in the dream that she forgot to ask the stranger for the name of that daughter, so how could she tell her? The following morning Mrs. D. told her husband of the dream and begged him not to leave that morning. She felt it was a sure sign from fate that they would have an accident. But her husband become irritated at the thought of delay and insisted that they leave as planned. They weren’t out of the state of Florida yet when upon rounding a curve they noticed a long line of cars and police cars rushing by. They stopped, and looked to see what was the matter. Down in a gully was a car upside down and a woman dressed all in black standing alongside, crying. Mrs. D. got out of her car and inquired what had happened. She was informed that the woman’s daughter had been killed and was still trapped in the car? (Holzer 40).

5. “E.W. is in his late thirties, a chemistry graduate now working in another field. In January 1958 he was living in Florida with his parents, running a business with them. One night he had a dream in which he became aware of himself taking a shower, when the telephone rang. He waited a few moments to see whether his parents would pick up the phone, since they were usually up early, but since it continued to ring Mr. W. grabbed his rob and answered the telephone. In the dream he noticed that he ran to an upstairs extension in a room which was made as if no one had slept in it for days. He grabbed the receiver, which was on a small table next to the bed and said hello. His mother’s voice was on the other end saying, “Son, I am at the hospital with Daddy. He’s dying. You’d better call the priest and get here as quickly as possible.? And suddenly the strange dream ended and Mr. W. found himself wide awake in bed. He worried about the content of this dream, but decided not to mention it to his parents. At that time his father, seventy-three was in perfect health and there was no reason why he should be in a hospital.

The dream occurred in January 1958. In late April Mr. W noticed that his father seemed to have difficulty speaking. Eventually he took him to a doctor and it was thought that Mr. W., Sr., had had a stroke. But the diagnosis seemed uncertain, so Mr. W. took his father to a brain specialist in a larger city. There it was discovered that Mr. W., Sr., had cancer of the brain which was inoperable. They decide to drive back to Florida since there was nothing they could do about it. On the morning of July 15 of the same year, Mr. W. got up fairly early and jumped into the shower. He was just drying himself off when the phone began ringing insistently. He grabbed his bathrobe and answered the phone immediately where as in the dream he had allowed it to ring for some time! His mother was on the other end of the line, saying the exact words he had heard her say in the dream many months before. “Son, I am at the hospital with daddy. He’s dying. You’d better call the priest and get here as quickly as possible? (Holzer 43-44).

Kind of trippy I would say, at least to be able to see strangers or people you know end in a tragic fate through your own dreams. Have you ever had one of these dreams, where you dreamt about it first and then something similar would happen in the future, such as hearing somebody say a phrase in the dream and then hearing it again sometime later in the future? It is said that if a person is more open-minded to prophetic dreams, that they will more likely to experience them. If you are more conscious and aware of your dreams, then you will more likely be able to find meaning in them, and a relationship between what goes on in your dreams to what goes happens outside of them.

Although predicting the future may be neat, having these “psychic? abilities may not always be a good thing to have since most of them end in minor or major tragedy. Is there any way where we can prevent them? Sometimes our dreams will give us “warning signs? that can help us alter fate and destiny. In other words, these dreams give the dreamer a chance to do something about it. Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing some more stories with you, as well as how one can alter to future by experiencing dreams called “Warning Dreams?.

Memory Functions Dramatically Improved

Memory is a function that depends directly on the brain. Long term memory and short term memory both are dependent on the brain's state when absorbing knowledge. Other factors can include brain blockages, the inability to focus, and a lack of attention span.

All of the factors mentioned above can be influenced and changed by altering the frequencies of the brain. The vibrations of the brain are responsible for how the brain absorbs and stores data. When the brain is in the correct state, information can and will be stored properly and efficiently. The drug companies offer many drugs and medications that are meant to alter the brain's functions, but too many of these drugs are found to be extremely dangerous, and many side effects have been noticed.

http://scrnch.me/lcacb

The good news is, there is a way to safely and effectively alter your brains learning and memory abilities without the use of drugs or medications. Direct sound waves can be used to adjust the brain's operating frequencies to promote healthy and efficient memory enhancement.

How Does It Work?
Sine wave generators were used to create two separate frequency waves which were introduced to each ear independently. The brain reacted by creating a third tone which  was the difference between the two. This allowed the brain to directly tune into a frequency that the ear can not hear!

When your brain is in the Theta State, your conscious blockages disperse. Theta is purely a subconscious state of mind, and tapping into it yields great results. You will be able to clear your mind and allow your deep subconscious mind to recall events, feelings, and situations that the conscious mind has blocked out.

We have two binaural Beats designed to help you enhance your memory. The first one focuses on long term memory, and the other stimulates both short term and long term memory. You will feel the results both mentally and physically upon first use. Fully Guaranteed!

Chakra Stimulation is an ancient practice used by Yoga Practitioners and Meditation experts which heightens spiritual awareness.

Humans have a nerve network that is interconnected with the sensory organs which is responsible for interpreting the physical world. The Chakra's, or Energy Centers, acts as a "Pump" which directs energy throughout your system.

http://scrnch.me/pb4mf

Our Chakra Stimulating Binaural Beats are specifically designed recordings that individually stimulate each of the seven Chakras. Each Chakra is stimulated by a different frequency range with predetermined base frequencies.

How Does It Work?
Sine wave generators were used to create two separate frequency waves which were introduced to each ear independently. The brain reacted by creating a third tone which  was the difference between the two. The brain instantly reacts to these frequencies causing a Shift In Consciousness.

Studies have concluded that each Chakra is stimulated by a different individual frequency. Our recordings focus on those frequencies and directly stimulate your Chakras with great success. Each Chakra frequency is unique and perfectly calibrated for optimum success. Now you can save years of intense practice and start opening your Chakras immediately!

Shamanism dates back more than 20,000 years where it was depicted on ancient cave walls, carved in boulders, and left for future generations to decode. Shamanism is not a religion on it's own, but rather a practice aimed towards interacting with the spiritual world. The most profound method Shamans used was to achieve an altered state of consciousness which allowed the inner body to travel to the spiritual world.

http://scrnch.me/bjsdj

With practice, a Shaman could eventually develop the ability to maintain a connection with the spiritual world without the need to leave his own body. Like anything else, with enough practice, these spiritual contacts became second nature. Ancient methods of achieving the Shaman Conscious Level included Drums, Chants, and Dancing, Drugs or outside compounds, pain, lack of sleep, incense, sweat lodges, and other methods.

Now you can reach the Shaman mindset easily and quickly with our Shaman Consciousness Binaural Beat Recording!

How Does It Work?
Sine wave generators were used to create two separate frequency waves which were introduced to each ear independently. The brain reacted by creating a third tone which was the difference between the two. The brain instantly reacts to these frequencies causing a Shift In Consciousness.

Studies show that the Shaman Conscious level is within the Low Theta range just teetering above Delta. Theta is where dreams come into play along with astral travel, intuition, and spiritual awakening, and Delta is the Deep Sleep state.

Our Shaman Consciousness Binaural Beat is designed to bring your mind directly to the Low Theta state without the need for any practice or other influences.

Higher Consciousness Reached Quickly and Easily

Fully Guaranteed

http://scrnch.me/5zlrb

Christ Consciousness is an expression used in various spiritual traditions to denote the consciousness of a human being who has reached a higher level of evolutionary development and who has come to know reality as it is. Evolution in this sense is not that which occurs by natural selection over generations of human reproduction but evolution brought about by the application of spiritual knowledge to the conduct of human life.

Through the application of such knowledge (traditionally the preserve of the world's great religions) to practical self-management, the awakening and development of faculties dormant in the ordinary human being is achieved. These faculties are aroused by and developed in conjunction with certain dispositions of character such as patience, kindness, truthfulness, humility and forgiveness towards one's fellow man ? qualities without which higher consciousness is not possible.

Now you can condition your mind and reach a Higher Conscious State easily and quickly. Our Christ Consciousness Binaural Beat is tuned to an exact Upper Beta Frequency that brings you into a state of harmony. Spiritual knowledge and Higher learning can be achieved within this state.

Promotes Good Health and Healing

Feel The Effects In Minutes

Your health is dependant on many factors. Good nutrition, daily exercise, and hygiene are all important factors. Medical practices mainly focus on the above parameters, but most are excluding the most important factor above all. The Human Mind.

The human brain is responsible for sending signals to muscles and organs which keeps everything functioning correctly. From dispersing white blood cells to healing broken bones, your brain is in-charge of the entire operation.

http://scrnch.me/eqi74

We have a selection of three binaural beats that directly stimulate the brain to promote good health. Studies have shown that certain frequencies within the Delta and Low Theta states do in fact help the body repair itself.

How Does It Work?
Sine wave generators were used to create two separate frequency waves which were introduced to each ear independently. The brain reacted by creating a third tone which was the difference between the two. This allowed the brain to directly tune into a frequency that the ear can not hear!

Using this technology, the natural rejuvenation frequencies the brain utilizes during sleep can be reproduced with perfect accuracy!

Have you ever tossed and turned all night and failed to reach a deep sleep? Even though you laid there and rested all night, it just wasn't enough rest to replenish your energy. When this happens, you wake up feeling horrible. The brain needs to reach the Delta State in order for the repair process to occur. When your mind is racing and you don't sleep deep, the brain never reaches the "Healing State".

Our Health Binaural Beat Recordings focus on selected frequencies that the brain uses to heal. These recordings mimic the natural frequencies that restore your energy and help your body's health! You don't have to be in a full sleep to reach these healing frequencies, but usually the body and brain only resonate on these frequencies during sleep. Now you can induce Good Health Frequencies any time you want by putting on your headphones and relaxing to the soothing sounds.

Full Money Back guarantee

Have you ever been in pain, but you were so pumped up or excited that you didn't even notice it? Have you ever been playing a sport and your pain disappeared during the game? Well you just experienced a release of endorphins from your brain.

http://scrnch.me/n86ik

Endorphins are natural pain killing compounds the brain produces naturally. Endorphins are released from many means such as exercise, electro-acupuncture, steroids, and opiates. Beta-endorphin is released into the blood (from the pituitary gland) and into the spinal cord and brain from hypothalamic neurons.

Publicized effect of endorphin production is the so-called "runner's high", which is said to occur when strenuous exercise takes a person over a threshold that activates endorphin production. Endorphins are released during long, continuous workouts, when the level of intensity is between moderate and high, and breathing is difficult.

With our Binaural Recording, you can utilize the brains power to release endorphins whenever you wish.

How Does It Work?
Sine wave generators were used to create two separate frequency waves which were introduced to each ear independently. The brain reacted by creating a third tone which  was the difference between the two. This allowed the brain to directly tune into a frequency that effects different aspects of the brain.

Studies have shown Endorphin Release can be achieved from the use of Binaural Beats which broadcast the High Beta Frequencies. During a Scientific study, eight patients were blood tested before and after a Binaural Beat session, and the results showed 10-50% improvement of Beta-Endorphin levels.

Our Endorphin Release Binaural Beat Recording uses a distinct and exact High Beta Frequency that shows great success in raising Endorphin levels.

The ‘Four Shining White Armored Knights’ of a Mastermind Group That Most People are kept In the Dark

When you hear the words 'Mastermind group', what comes first into your mind? Do you picture Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone “collaborating? in the Winter Estates? Or perhaps Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield in the midst of promoting there best seller 'Chicken Soup for the Soul'? If you are, you are on the right track. Mastermind group is not a game nor is it sinister. Successful people have always leveraged on a Mastermind group to achieve paranormal success. And this is due to the '4 Shining White Armored Knights' of a Mastermind group. Mastermind group levels the playing field. The business battlefield is never equal. You got to be keenly competitive to start and build a thriving business. And this requires you to develop your core expertise but at the same time, develop multiple skills and knowledge databases. Mastermind group empowers you to do so with much more ease. A meeting of minds from a diversified field of expertise adds perspective, depth, experience and knowledge to the person being masterminded. The only requirement is that you have to be receptive, and become a dry and thirsty sponge ready to absorb the input. Leave the analysis to a later time. Do this and you can level the playing field in a much shorter time. Mastermind group promotes individual and team excellence. Excellence is a product of habitual good practice. The regularity of meetings and constructive feedback is important in establishing habits. Members catch the habit of constantly assessing themselves for their strengths and areas for improvement that they themselves perceive what knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to acquire to attain team goals. In the process, they attain individually excellence as well. An example is in the case of a musical orchestra: each member plays a different instrument. In order to achieve harmony of music from the different instrument, members will polish their part in the piece, aside from practicing as an ensemble. Consequently, they improve individually as an instrument player. Mastermind group develops high commitment to common goals. A Mastermind group balances the attainment of immediate targets with long-term goals towards the vision of an organization. As mentioned earlier, with the alignment of personal goals with organizational or team goals, personal interests are kept in check. By constantly communicating the vision through formal and informal conversations, the members are inspired and motivated. Setting short-term team goals aligned with organizational goals; and making an action plan to attain these goals can help sustain the increased motivation and commitment to common goals of the members. Mastermind group produces valuable leaders. Leadership by example is important in a Mastermind group. A leader loses credibility when he cannot practice what he preaches. This means that a leader should be well organized, highly competent is his field, communicates openly and encourages feedback, and has a clear idea of the organization's vision-mission-goals. By vicarious and purposive learning, members catch the same good practices and attitudes from the leader, turning them into coaching leaders themselves. If a member experiences good leadership, he is most likely to do the same things when entrusted with formal leadership roles. Walt Disney once said, “Many hands, hearts, and minds generally contribute to anyone's notable achievements.? As a business owner, you have to leverage. The inability to leverage will mean less profit and in the worst case scenario, it will spell doom to your business. Make the commitment to learn the art of leverage through a Mastermind group and frog leap your business to the next level!

This May SHOCK You - Mediums Who Talk to the Dead - Is It Fact Or Fiction?

Who else wants to talk about psychic mediums?  It's amazing how many news stories, TV specials and other seasonal promotions are out there pumping up the paranormal! And nothing is more fascinating to me than the topic of mediums to purport to talk to the dead....MOSTLY because I've had my own suite of sensational experiences, but also because it's such a hot button issue, with "true believers" on one side, and the cynical, skeptical and downright DOUBTFUL on the other!

Filed Under: Paranormal PROOF is a Whole Lot More Common Than You Realize

Mediums have been "performing" for hundreds of years. Some are con artists. Others mean well, but aren't really all that talented. And others still....are doing something so unique, powerful and transcendent, that even the most hardcore science minded skeptic CAN'T explain it away. (other than to say they are conspiring with other people to get the facts ahead of time!)

Need proof? Some of the greatest scientific minds of ALL time have studied psychic mediumship, gone IN feeling like the whole thing was a "joke" and come out as STAUNCH believers in the idea that life goes on, AND the dead CAN communicate with us from the other side.

William James (often thought of as one of the greatest intellectuals ever), Frederick Meyers, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes), and even the cofounder of the theory of evolution, Alfred Rusel Wallace, studied and came to believe in the AUTHENTICITY of psychic communications coming from the "other side".

(an interesting historical note: Abraham Lincoln is known to have been a believer in mediums, not only conducting seances in the White House, but also telling others of his own impending death months before his assassination after seeing his "spirit" leave his body in the reflection of a mirror)

Today, famous psychic mediums like John Edward, George Anderson and many others have been studied rigorously by science minded skeptics....and the BEST they can offer to explain some of the amazing information that comes through is fraud. (as in - the TV hosts, the audience or the radio call in show people at home are all in on a giant conspiracy together!) Or they'll claim "cold reading" is used to "lead" people to give answers that the medium then uses to guess more information. Does that happen in some of the cases? Absolutely! But does that explain the GENUINE information coming through REAL mediums who aren't "paid to perform" and aren't asking ANYTHING that doesn't have a "yes or no" answer, are often doing the work on the telephone and have NO real way of ascertaining ANYTHING about the person they are reading, other than what they claim to get from genuine spirits? It doesn't....and there are FAR too many authentic cases of this to discount it as "cheating" or a "good guess" or other insulting intellectual silliness!

The Dirty Little Secret Skeptics Refuse to Admit About Psychic Readings

In this article I'd like to take a look at some psychic reading secrets that most hardcore skeptics REFUSE to acknowledge. If you are "new" to the world of psychic readings, abilities and powers, you may be surprised to know that there is really a "WAR" going on between believers, and skeptics. And while "war" seems like a pretty heavy word, it is an accurate depiction of what is going on out there in the wild and woolly world of investigation into paranormal and psychic "stuff" across the board.

The Long and Short of it is.......

There are tons of real scientific tests, studies and research being done right now into psychic readings, mediumistic communication from the "other side" and all sorts of other cool stuff. And some of the things being uncovered through this research is nothing short of amazing.

Real psychics, who are doing astonishing work, in laboratory conditions even, and coming up with incredible "hits" that defy any mainstream explanation. Mediums who talk to the "other side" and spirit world coming up with facts, figures and stories SO sensational and inexplicable that there is NO good explanation OTHER than they actually ARE doing what they purport to be doing. (speaking directly to spiritual "beings" who have survived physical death)

Yet....with each amazing advancement in this field, the skeptics come out of the woodwork, deriding, debunking and overall just DENOUNCING each and every "success" as silly

And when famous celebrity mediums like John Edward, George Anderson, and others have been studied by REAL statisticians, and scientists in a controlled scientific study like the ones that took place at the University of Arizona a few years ago, and they scored OFF the charts, the skeptics STILL scurried around to "explain" the amazing readings as fraud, lucky guessing, or a complete conspiracy! (even though these tests were filmed and later made into a documentary for HBO called the "Afterlife Experiments".)

Here is the truth: (and this has been PROVEN over and over again in serious studies by super smart scientists AND skeptics alike)

  1. Psychic abilities are true.
  2. Real mediums exist.
  3. Just about ANYONE can make "contact" with deceased relatives, loved ones or people who have "crossed over" if you truly want to and seek out the proper medium.
  4. Other paranormal abilities have been PROVEN to be true as well. These include remote viewing, ESP, telepathy, OBE experiences, and all sorts of other exotic skill sets that science simply CAN'T explain with our conventional model of how things work.

And remember......before you believe this is "fringe" stuff believed ONLY by wacky and loony new age people......

Think again! Some of the most rigorous investigators of psychic mediums and abilities have been amongst the most intelligent men and women around the globe.

Don't believe me? Just check out Pulitzer Prize winning author Deborah Blum's recent book "Ghost Hunters", where she meticulously details the amazing intellectual GIANTS who studied (and came to believe in the authenticity of) psychic mediums, clairvoyants and intuitive's, and their messages from both THIS world, and the next..:-)

Some Truths You Should Know About Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance is one interesting subject; the thing is, so many people are misled with false information about what it is what it is not. It's rather unfortunate, but so many are actually being scammed of their money by choosing the wrong psychic while some others often feel disappointed because what they supposed to be paranormal is actually not, or it's the other way around.

Simply put, clairvoyance is the ability to see things that are beyond the capacity of the five senses. A great number of authentic psychics are said to be clairvoyants because they have the gift to see something that an ordinary person cannot by using the normal faculties.

It has to be made clear, however, that not all psychics have the gift of clairvoyance. For marketing purposes, many psychics claim themselves to be clairvoyant in their ads and promo materials. To be clairvoyant is to have more specialty, more psychic power, so to speak, and this is what so many people are looking for. They want something more than ordinary psychic powers.

Today, there are different ways by which clairvoyance is exhibited but the most exciting ones are demonstrated in experiments called remote viewing. These experiments involve selecting a group of psychics to see information in the great beyond and then asking them to accurately describe to the scientists what they see.

A few years ago, certain clairvoyant psychics were able to see and passed on the information on how Saddam Hussein would be found, in what condition would he be found, where he would be found and so on. It's quite baffling for the ordinary person to understand, but this only seems to prove one thing --- clairvoyance is not a product of one's imagination. It is true and effective!

You have to be particularly careful if you are looking for the services of a psychic. Keep in mind that being a psychic and a clairvoyant at the same time is a great gift; however, not all psychics are clairvoyant in nature.

There are quite a lot of resources online to help you find the right psychic. Just because they are psychics, it does not give them the right to take advantage of what you know or what you don't know. It always pays to do a lot of research first so you will be able to spot the one with whom you can deal professionally.

For sure there are plenty of online groups, communities of psychics and followers of the paranormal. Take time to go over these groups; if you can join them, do so and get to know the members first. Spending time in such communities can help you know the things that you need to look out for when searching for the services of a psychic.

You can also get expert advice from the members of these communities especially when it comes to the issue of choosing the right psychic. It is always wise to spend some time shopping around and not making hasty decisions in matters like this.

Three Powerful Ways to Prove Psychic Powers Are Real

Who else is unsure whether or not psychic abilities and powers are true? Are you curious about the paranormal...but afraid or embarrassed to admit it because lots of people think it's silly? If you are.....the good news is that you are FAR from alone! Studies show that while up to 80% of people believe in some sort of paranormal powers or psychic abilities, a good amount of us (especially those of us with "higher" educations or devout religious beliefs) are actually afraid to express our interest due to outside pressure that it's silly to study.

It's not....and I'm here to tell you that my first GENUINE psychic reading totally changed my life in ways that I could never had predicted, and INSTANTLY transformed me from a skeptic to a curious and open minded explorer of the mysteries of life.

So if you are having similar curiosities and want to PROVE it to yourself that psychic powers are true, here are 3 powerful ways of doing it in a hurry!

- Dive into Books!

And I'm NOT talking about some of the sillier "new age" stuff, either. There are TONS of smart, scientific books written on psychic phenomena and the incredible body of evidence that supports it as fact. Eminent scientists, researchers, mystical adventurers and "consciousness cowboys" have written GREAT books on psychic experiments that will blow you away once you open your intellect up to the infinite. I'm a huge fan of books....and many of my favorites in this realm have CONVINCED me in the perennial proof that psychic abilities, and lots of other cool stuff is part of our everyday, invisible world for sure!

- The Power of Personal Practice.

Dive in. Work on having your own experiences! The truth is, all of us can develop, refine and cultivate psychic abilities...and that means you, too! And of course, there is nothing more personally powerful in terms of proof, than being able to see latent abilities come to life WITHIN your OWN self. With practice, regardless of what you currently believe, you CAN become more intuitive, insightful...and YES, psychic overall to boot!

- Get a Reading Yourself!

This is where I began MY personal journey...and is still a regular part of my own inquiry. How? Seek out genuine, gifted and authentic psychic intuitive, mediums, clairvoyants and otherwise and get your own readings. What you will discover WILL blow you away...and for a fraction of the cost of having to spend BIG bucks with the celebrity psychics that can take forever to book.

Trust me when I tell you....there is NOTHING more mind blowing than having a complete stranger tell you things that would be IMPOSSIBLE to know without some unexplainable gift. (and if that doesn't change your mind...I DON'T know what will!)

Developing your ESP Skills IS Now Easier Than Ever!

If there ever was a “skill? or ability that could be enhanced through self-hypnosis and specifically, Binaural Beats, then ESP is it!  Do you want to develop your Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)? Perhaps you want to tap into other “paranormal? abilities such as remote viewing, clairvoyance, or telepathy?

The Unexplainable Store really specializes in just this type of program.  After years of research, scientists discovered that people with enhanced ESP are operating in a Theta brainwave pattern that can be induced by listening to frequencies that fall in the range of 5-12 HZ – considered the “ESP frequency?.  This is a very low tone that most humans cannot hear.  That is, until Binaural Beat technology was discovered!

What researchers learned is that by introducing a certain tone in one ear, and a different tone into the other ear, the human brain has an amazing ability to merge the two tones into a unique third tone, and this tone is “audible? at a level below the threshold of our hearing.  In other words, the ear never hears this tone, but the brain creates it, and when the brain creates it, if listened to for long enough it will start shifting brainwave patterns into the Theta state.  And this is the state where ESP abilities suddenly come alive. Binaural beats unlock this “ESP frequency? so that anyone could develop their extra-sensory abilities.

What this means to you is that you don’t have to spend years training yourself to have an enhanced “sixth sense? or ESP, you only need to listen to the right binaural beat tones, and then relax as the tones work their magic .  This recording series also includes hypnotic suggestions to program your brain to unlock the portions of the brain that are active in people with well developed ESP, but that are dormant for most of the rest of us.

This program, downloadable as MP3 recordings are the simplest, yet most effective way ever discovered to enhance your paranormal abilities, specifically the phenomenon known as ESP. Click here to learn more about binaural beats and this very affordable program to help you almost instantly expand your sense of ESP!

How Safe Is Your Ghost Hunting?

It's an important question; just how dangerous is ghost hunting? Forget being possessed by hostile spirits, simply walking around in a strange, pitch black house trying to catch a glimpse of a ghost could put you in the emergency room, after all, you're looking for important evidence and not particularly where you're feet are going.

Sometimes the dangers are not so obvious. You might be in old, sometimes derelict buildings that are in desperate need of repair or renovation. Inhaling asbestos and toxic chemicals can also be an unseen threat.

Thanks to a revived interest in ghost hunting, many people are finding ways to record evidence with ghost equipment such as infra red video cameras. Some can be used remotely and this helps to both maximize the surveillance area, and reduce the amount of risky ground that needs to be physically covered, often at night.

Four examples of remote viewing ghost equipment and their uses are:

  • Night Vision Camera with DVR (Digital Video Recorder); these cameras can be setup in different rooms through out the building or area being investigated. The camera can be hooked up to a DVR wirelessly or wired to a DVR to record evidence or to be watched remotely by other team members.
  • Digital Voice Recorders; are used to pick up ghost EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). These recorders can be setup to be voice activated so you can leave it unattended in a room.
  • Tonal EVP Listeners; these devices can either be carried or left in a room to record energy fluctuations and make a changing tone that varies when the background energy levels rise as a paranormal event manifests.
  • Infrared Video Camera; These cameras are used by the Hubble telescope to look back to the beginnings of time. They are equally useful for measuring incredibly subtle variations in heat and cold during a paranormal event.

But even with all the technology out there, there are still aspects of ghost hunting that will always require human beings. We are still needed to ask the right questions and make spontaneous decisions. Ghost hunting can be sometimes uneventful and boring, but when it is not the fear and thrill of exploring lonely places, looking for some mysterious full body apparition and catching the evidence on good quality ghost equipment is an incredible high.

There are three commonsense rules to ghost hunting.

  • When hunting make sure you travel with a partner. Not only for safety but for collaboration of experiences.
  • Use common sense when investigating.
  • Stay calm and approach investigating in a scientific manner and you will collect some great evidence.

Who knows, maybe you will be the one to answer the question, 'is there an afterlife'?

Get an Accurate Psychic Reading Without Being Deceived Ever Again!

Who else is a big fan of psychic energies, readings and just about ANYTHING that has to do with paranormal powers? If you are anything like the vast majority of people who enjoy our articles and comment on our content, the simple truth is that you are super interested in psychic abilities and most likely are looking to get your first reading as well.

But if you're anything like I was when I first got started on the paranormal path.....you are equally as SKEPTICAL as you are excited and enthusiastic, right? You want to get a REAL reading...but are nervous about how, when or with whom to place your trust. Sound familiar? If it does....we wrote this article with YOU in mind! Curious to know more? Great....continue reading as we take a closer look below!

Filed Under: Psychic Ads, Offers and Pitches to Avoid

The first thing you need to know is what to AVOID. (this would have saved me about 2 years of disappointment!)

  1. Offers that say "free" or even worse...."ABSOLUTELY free". Why? They never are.....there is ALWAYS a catch. And the readings themselves are rarely good.
  2. Offers that PROMISE 100% accuracy. Why? There is no such thing. And NO reputable, honest or accurate psychic would make such a silly promise to get business!
  3. Psychic healing, curses, spells or other silly ness. Why? Because most reputable psychics, and just about EVERY major service or network will not wade into this murky space....as it's rife with fraud, fakery and even the occasional con artist to boot! (it doesn't mean it's not true per se....just that ad's that OFFER this should be avoided)

Okay....but SHOULD You look for in a reputable reading?

Very easy.

  • Good Guarantees: A money back guarantee or similar. You should be PROMISED to be satisfied.....and that should be in writing.
  • Fair Prices: Free is NEVER free. But a good price, with a good guarantee as above, is optimal when calling (or visiting) a psychic service or individual intuitive.
  • Good Reviews! This is super important....and one of the most important elements to me. Look for psychics who have cultivated raving fans! Most networks will leave feedback buttons for their customers, and reading the past reviews, or experiences of previous clients is a GREAT way to predict your own!

The Bottom Line?

Using your own natural instincts and intellect is a great way to guess how good a psychic is going to be BEFORE you call, drop by or visit online.

Do a little bit of due diligence...and you'll find your experience is often the BIG benefactor!

Avoid offers that sound "too good to be true"....and go with your gut. A psychic should feel like an old friend...and being comfortable is paramount.

But get this part right...and like me, you'll get readings that are not only GREAT...they often can play a BIG role in the major choices you NEED to make to get where you're destined to go..:-) (and with lots of good luck along the way!)

Connecting to the Reality of the Afterlife

There are so many individuals alive today still wondering whether there is life after death, and if there is, what sort of afterlife is it? How can one be sure of the information available today on such controversial subjects as this one? I have studied all aspects of this subject quite seriously and as a skeptic since 1972. Unfortunately there has been much misinformation on this subject floating around throughout history, mostly created by powerful priests, popes and bishops trying to keep the masses under their control. I have only recently found some sources of information that I can trust such as the near-death experiences of others, my own personal experiences, and the awesome Leslie Flint Educational Trust recordings.

Go to "The Leslie Flint Educational Trust" for a massive collection of absolutely genuine and lengthy (some lasting up to 50 minutes) paranormal voice recordings taped by George Woods, Betty Greene and many others from the mid 1950's to early 1990's. After extremely carefully analyzing all their work and all other recordings, I have to say, they are the most substantial breakthrough evidence in afterlife research ever. However, before listening to any seance please listen to the introductory message by one of Mr. Leslie Flint's sitters, Betty Greene here. Also please listen to the recordings of radio programs, lectures, etc. explaining direct voice mediumship, and interviews with Leslie Flint which can also be found at the The Leslie Flint Educational Trust.

It is best to keep an open mind and try to avoid any preconceived ideas, notions, and misconceptions, because direct voice mediumship is an extremely serious, delicate and intricate subject that very few understand or even take seriously. The dramatically varying paranormal voices have to go through several stages of thought to etheric to sound translation through the intermediary of ectoplasm before they can be physically heard and then recorded on tapes of varying quality. The original personalities, information, and various accents often come through extremely well and usually sounding very similar to how the person sounded while still alive.

Many of the personalities that come through are often channeled through a spirit much closer to the Earth vibration, because the levels of vibration or spheres that they come from are often too far removed (out of range) from the vibrational level of the voice box. Rather like a relay system with Leslie Flint being the physical medium or channel on Earth, while possibly the spirit guide Dr. Marshall, and spirit control, "Mickey" (John Whitehead who passed away at age 11 near beginning of the 20th century) provides the mediumship on the etheric level. Spirits from much higher spheres can then communicate, however some of their original voice is lost. This is why many of the souls from the higher spheres may sometimes sound similar to Dr. Marshall or Mickey. The overall process is tricky and extremely complex. The astonishing thing is, is that we are able to hear anything at all, and that anyone in the world with a computer and an internet connection can now listen to a huge selection of them!

Still skeptical? It is an overwhelming tendency even among the most brilliant and professional scientific minds to completely dismiss a subject such as alien visitations or afterlife as completely false long before knowing anything about it. Such prejudice and ignorance is like the child who naively declares that science is completely false without first carefully understanding what science and the scientific method really are all about in the first place. Those who in a closed-minded way condemn a subject soley based on what far too little they know about it already are indeed ignorant in the worse way. "Condemnation without investigation" kills knowledge. I also find the long held, dark age Christian belief that spiritualism is the "devil's work" equally irksome, absolutely non-scientific and frustrating. When it comes to realization of truth, especially regarding the afterlife, humankind has been extremely poor at it.

Mr. Leslie Flint (1911-1994) has to be one of the most authentic, most closely scrutinized, and verifiable sources of afterlife information ever, and was one of the most prolific mediums of the 20th century and the most thoroughly tested. I will explain to you why I think there is no way these voices could have been a hoax and why I am 100% convinced that the information that came through is real, verifiable and precise! You will see why it would be more incredible that they were somehow faked than actually be real souls speaking through in the candid, honest, from-the-heart, natural and casual manner that they had spoken in.

After very carefully listening to over 200 recordings (out of a collection of one thousand old tape recordings most of which are not yet available on the internet and taped by the sitters George Woods, Betty Greene and others from the late 1950's to early 1990's) and many more recently released, I can with 100% certainty guarantee that all of the recordings are of absolutely genuine people claiming to be dead! The whole effect is simply impossible to reproduce fraudulently. One would need numerous impossibly talented child and adult actors and actresses just to recreate these tapes without copying them! Quite ordinary and natural sounding disembodied personalities have been caught on tape! Regardless of the fact they were spirits or not, they were definitely real, sincere, honest-to-goodness sounding people claiming to be spirits from another existence, and definitely NOT actors and definitely NOT those attempting to contrive or fraudulently represent spirits.

You must listen to all recordings carefully yourself to fully understand exactly what I mean and why I know they are genuine; by how the personalities presented themselves, how they sounded, the descriptions they conveyed, how they conversed very intelligently with the sitters, how they answered questions only the person would know, how some seemed to be able to read the sitter's mind(s), how some were able to see things going in a completely darkened room and recount the events of the day only the sitter had known about, the 100% meaningful and inspiring spiritual subject matter and wisdom they eloquently expressed, their unique mannerisms, the heartfelt reunions of old friendships and loved ones, their genuine sense of humor and funny, eccentric quirks, the difficulties some had communicating, the limitations they faced, the odd and unusual effects caused by the ectoplasm they were using, the different accents, foreign and/or long forgotten dead languages and songs, and how they concluded their talks, etc.

Even if somehow the voices were faked, how on this Earth would Leslie Flint get hundreds of 100% honest sounding actors and actresses to spontaneously come through out of thin air and correctly answer all questions from sitters and from audiences as large as two thousand people in lecture halls and theatres (such as Kingsway Hall) throughout the UK? Countless correct names and addresses of dead relatives were given, including countless details only the living individual(s) addressed to would know about. If they were faked, where would all the "psychically gifted" (they would have to be!) actors and actresses needed to answer all the sitters' questions come from? Then who paid all these actors and actresses to create these highly relevant and intelligent conversations with complete strangers for over a period of sixty years, even answering questions sometimes just before they were asked as if they were reading one's mind and then often speaking at length about the importance of unconditional love, forgiveness, honesty, humanity, service to others, and unbiased Christianity?

Psychic Advisors -What and Who Are They?

The word “psychic? is defined as “mental? or “of the soul?, but usually refers to a person’s ability to perceive unseen information, outside of from the five known senses. Sometimes called “extrasensory perception?, a psychic possesses a form of paranormal ability. While the modern notion of “real psychic talent? is more widely accepted than ever, a lot of people still deny its existence.

The term “psychic advisors? has been recently popularized by the multi-million dollar psychic industry, through which psychics provide clients with insights into their future. Some of the most widely known psychic advisors of the past century include John Edward and Sylvia Browne.

Psychic ability and fortune telling skills date back to ancient times, and history shows that many early civilizations closely followed astrology. Those who were able to predict future events without using charts or other methods were first known as “seers? or prophets, and over time they became known as psychics, or clairvoyants.

From the earliest prophets of the Bible, to the seers who practiced their craft in the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, a sense of awe has surrounded these extraordinary people, and many have sought out their visions of the future. Perhaps one the most enduring historical figures with psychic ability was Nostradamus, a sixteenth-century French apothecary whose predictions are still consulted to this day. Most of his prophetic visions dealt with impending disasters, such as earthquakes, wars, floods, murders and plagues, but none of his predictions were dated. While Nostradamus remains a controversial figure, his fans still credit him with the accurate predictions of numerous world events.

In the late nineteenth century, Edgar Cayce gained worldwide popularity for making a number of highly publicized psychic predictions at a time when Modern Spiritualism had just become a popular. Among several others who subscribed to this movement, Cayce believed he could make contact with the spirit world and communicate with the dead.

While skeptics and scholars attribute the presence of psychic abilities to a combination of manipulate trickery and self delusion, in a 2005 Gallup survey, an astonishing 41 percent of Americans surveyed expressed some belief in extrasensory perception. In the same study, Gallup reported that 26 percent believe in clairvoyance and 31 percent think that psychic, or telepathic communication is possible.

Also, some people believe that a person can inherit a psychic ability, since the talent seems to be present in families from generation to generation. Still others believe that psychic skills can be enhanced, or even activated, by practicing focused mental disciplines, like meditation.

According to 2006 Oklahoma University survey, belief in psychic abilities and the paranormal is more common among college seniors, at 31% and graduate students, at 34%, than it is with college freshmen, at 23%. This study suggests that the higher a person’s education level, the more likely they are to trust in psychic advisors.

People who claim to possess psychic abilities often will try to make a living from their talent, with many of these psychic advisors hosting their own psychic chat web sites, radio or television programs. The recent increase in psychic hotlines, psychic networks, and online psychic readings may have contributed to the industry’s market share, but it has also made it much more difficult to be sure if the person you speak with is really a genuine psychic, or just a fake psychic looking to exploit an innocent public.

How To Start To use Your Clairvoyant Skills

I am a  UK Medium named Andrew Garley. This article is the first of seven showing you clairvoyant techniques. You don't have to be especially talented to flex your clairvoyant muscles! You are clairvoyant!  You already possess all psychic intuition! But we are all "tuned into" this capability at differing degrees. How you are as a person, intuitively. Do you take heed to your inner voice? For example, and also how self-developed you are as a person. Seek to give more and concentrate less on gaining for yourself. I recognise it sounds a bit saintly, but this can go from the basics of merely saying thank you to individuals for being kindhearted, like letting you through in traffic, or holding open a doorway, to feeling gratitude for all the advantages in your life. It strokes the ego to evaluate other people but it actually does you no favors in the end.  But as much hurt can be done in the other direction - being too unsympathetic on yourself! Those that are born with furthered psychic powers lead onto become mediums as a trenchant advancement. To progress or learn anything, involves endeavor and practise and developing psychic power is no different..But all it demands is a few minutes every day and you'll be surprised at your progress. Don't stop after attempting it once for a minute and feeling you've not begun anywhere. Discontinue what you are doing for a few min and concentrate on the moment.  And so this second, look at yourself.  When you speak to someone are you taking heed, judging? Become careful of what you articulate to people. Get familair with how you respond to others. This is the first step on the ladder of enlightenment! By acknowledging the way you feel and having a deep sense of your personal energy makes for a greater perception of the energies outside your domain. There is an energy field that plugs in that you probably know nothing of. This energy sphere is constructed of intricate sections such as planetary influence, entities and astral beings, your guardian angel and your spiritual guides, angel beings and your deceased loved ones. That's not all either. Our associate beings on earth - their thoughts and feelings can also stimulate our individual energy. Come to know this, that we tie in to the globe and each one another, living or dead.  It is all one! And as you grow one with all, you acknowledge and understand all. Clasp the significance that we are godlike, inmaterial energy encapsulated into a dense earth-suit, (our body), we use this earth-suit to execute the game of life, the prescripts of which we in reality established ourselves! If you can tell apart which is your energy and what is "outside" energy you've acquired the 1st paranormal step.  This is a simple task for lesson one, but also of fundamental value! Think about who you are, your body, your personality, your own thoughts.  Thy self to know! Love and Blessings

A Field Trip May Be Just What A Novel Needs

As part of her research for novels, bestselling writer Jodi Picoult has milked a cow in Amish country and roughed it with native Alaskans. She shudders when she remembers heading out to an abandoned New England mental institution on a winter night with paranormal investigators. Her group trudged across a field where a building had burned down with patients inside.

“I was walking with a sensitive, someone who can 'feel' ghosts,? Picoult said.  “Suddenly, all the hair stood up on the back of my neck. Before I could even mention this to my walking buddy, he lifted a digital camera and held it up between us backward, over our shoulders. Although there was nothing visible to the naked eye, in the viewfinder of the camera was a white, misty, wraith-like image.?

Like many published novelists, Picoult, author of books such as Vanishing Acts, doesn’t spend all her time at her computer or her fiction wouldn’t be as richly textured as it is. Field trips like hers can expand a writer’s knowledge base and provide opportunities to gather color, atmosphere and on-scene information unavailable in a research book. Even more important, hands-on exposure will show editors you did your homework. Agents and editors trust authors who strive for accuracy and readers like authors who plunge them into a world ripe with authentic details.

“There’s nothing worse than reading a book and knowing some of it just rings false,? says novelist Erica Orloff.

Sure, the adage 'Write what you know' has some truth, yet if that's all we wrote, our fiction would be boring.  Next time you get stuck on a scene, put on your reporter’s hat and go out and find the story. Here are some tips on how to do it, and a look at how some successful novelists put the practice to work.

Arranging Field Trips

If you want to tour a site or interview an expert, search the Internet and telephone directories for leads.  Larger organizations might have a PR department that handles inquiries.  Cold calls are fine, but don’t subject someone to an on-the-spot interrogation; make an appointment so you both have time to prepare.  You could also outline your request in a letter or e-mail. Before the visit, read up on your subject and develop specific questions. Bring a notebook to the interview and ask whether you can call with follow-up questions. Afterwards, be sure to show your appreciation with a thank you note.

Bestselling suspense author Lisa Gardner met with the Rhode Island State Police for her novel The Survivor's Club and even staked out a Providence courthouse to determine the ideal angle for a sniper shot.  For The Killing Hour, she visited the FBI Academy to learn about the life of a new agent and she spent a week with the U.S. Geological Survey team, checking out remote places in Virginia for an “Eco-Killer? to abandon his victims. The Other Daughter led her on a hunt to Texas, where she researched execution protocol.

“I need to be able to picture something to write it,? she said. “Actually seeing Texas's retired electric chair, was so much more riveting than simply reading about it.  To walk through a maximum security prison, getting the sights, the sounds, and particularly the smell, made the whole atmosphere come alive in a way simply talking about it never would. Then I can take this experience in turn, and make it come alive for the reader.?

Stephen Coonts, bestselling action/adventure author, took a flight in the F-22 cockpit concept demonstrator at Lockheed Martin in Georgia for Fortunes of War. He talked his way into the V-22 Osprey simulator at NAS Patuxent River, the basis for scenes in his novella "Al-Jihad."  While research is vital, he advises not overloading the reader with information.

“The first requirement for any writer is a good story,? Coonts said.  “Once you see how the story is going to go, then do enough research to give the tale the flavor of authenticity.  Salt in a little jargon, but only a little.  Write around details you don't know.   The easiest and best way to do research is to find an expert and ask precisely the questions to which you need answers.  Shotgunning (or scattered) research is a waste of time.?

Making It Ring True

Orloff recommends deciding settings from the beginning so they will seem organic to the story. She scouted out Sanibel Island for Spanish Disco and realized the slow speed limits would irk her impatient heroine. Orloff wanted to depict a grungy bar in The Roofer, which is set in Hell's Kitchen in New York City. She visited a similar place and saw that nicotine build-up had left yellow-brown stains on the bar’s paneling.

“That is the kind of detail that sets good writing apart from simply writing 'dirty,'? she said.  “When I speak to school kids as an author, I tell them to banish 'cheesy' adjectives from their writing like: pretty, dirty, ugly. What is dirty to the average reader may not hold a candle to what the crime lord of Hell's Kitchen thinks of as dirty. I think something that sinks a book for some readers is someone who gets a locale wrong.?

Childrens book author Uma Krishnaswami literally wrote the book on field trips, Beyond the Field Trip, Teaching and Learning in Public Places, which describes the rewards of school excursions.  Krishnaswami returned to her India roots to research her middle grade novel Naming Maya.  She recalls stopping to take a picture outside a police station in Chennai, India as she and her mother were walking to a grocery store.

“A policeman,? she recalls, “came charging out to scold me and said didn't I know these were dangerous times and I couldn't go around taking pictures of a police station. . . .My mother said, 'He can tell you're from 'over there.'   Well, I was wearing a sari, but oh heck, Teva shoes, water bottle . . . what did I think, I could blend in just like that?  The whole thing was so perfect that the scene just fell into my book and locked up that place where nothing else would fit.?

Keeping A Series Fresh

Authors of series fiction face special challenges as they’re portraying recurring characters and settings. To prevent staleness, Twist Phelan has taken roping lessons, cycled from coast-to-coast and gone rock climbing for her Pinnacle Peak Mysteries. Mindy Starns Clark, author of the Christian-themed Million Dollar Mysteries, convinced a paranoid owner to let her into a secret mine.

Clark advises writers to develop brief plot outlines for upcoming series installments before they write the first book. This makes it easier to spot unwanted similarities and to create unique circumstances.

“It also helps to know where you're going in the future, because it allows you to plant seeds,? she said.  “I knew that my protagonist would be doing some scuba diving in a later book, so I had her mention that she was a certified diver in an earlier book.  Otherwise I don’t think it would’ve been as believable when it finally happened.?

Sharon Short, who centers a mystery series around Laundromat owner Josie Toadfern, wanted Josie’s autistic cousin Guy to make regular appearances.  She toured a residential home, interviewing the director and meeting an autistic man who proudly prepared tea for guests. Without that visit, Short doubts she could’ve made Guy a continuing character. She did her research long before she had a contract and says new writers shouldn’t feel embarrassed about a lack of publishing credentials.

“Most people love to talk about their areas of interest,? she said. “Just saying ‘I'm writing a book about XYZ and I'd love to visit your museum/store/residential home/whatever and ask a few questions’ is enough to unlock most doors. And if it doesn't work. . .find someone else to ask.?

Rhys Bowen, author of the Molly Murphy Mysteries and the Constable Evans Mysteries, has one series set in North Wales and the other in 1901 New York City. She is always criss-crossing the globe to make sure she gets things right. In Wales, it can be details as small as which beer is being drunk in a certain pub.  In New York, her explorations might focus on how long it takes to walk from one place to another and is the walk feasible in the narrow boots her character would be wearing.

“I don't feel you can write about a place without experiencing its soul,? Bowen said. “Choose a setting and characters because you feel passionately about them. . .If the series takes off, you'll have to live with these people for a long time.?

Creative Alternatives

It can be a tough decision to travel for research, especially if you’re unpublished with a family and job. Sometimes the telephone can be a cheap alternative. Audrey Couloumbis, author of the Newbery Honor book Getting Near to Baby, needed to learn about Louisiana Cajun Country for an earlier project. Her local library directed her to people she could call on the phone.  She got a feel for the language and learned about holidays such as when “Miz Lanforcaux threw her annual pig barbecue which no men, wimmins or chirrun would miss, even to do murder.? Whenever a question arose, she called one of her new friends.

“I got fascinating detail such as 'the day it rained snakes,' one of the hottest days on record, and yes, snakes just fell from the tree branches when they got too hot,? Couloumbis said.

Writers can be pro-active about gathering information by keeping a journal of experiences, even if the story is not yet in hand or mind. Preserve details so that if you ever need them, you’ll have a firsthand account.  After traveling, store brochures, real estate magazines and maps in a “you never know? file. When Sue Owens Wright, author of Howling Bloody Murder, was a guest speaker at the Illinois Basset Waddle, she realized she couldn’t let this opportunity slide.  More than 1,000 dogs were competing in contests such as Longest Wingspan, when they extended ears Dumbo-style.  The Waddle King and Queen loafed in royal raiment atop their float.

“Unbeknownst to the hounds and their owners, while observing this bizarre event for the first time, I was also taking notes,? said Wright.  “I left with plenty of background material.?

The unfortunate reality is that editors have many reasons to reject a manuscript.  Don’t let inaccuracy or a lack of imagery ruin your chances of publication.  Small details bring a book to life, and getting them right is the obligation of a good writer.
